Valentines Day Bait & Switch: Groupon Must Avoid Becoming Just Another Useless Coupon Site
I assume that “sale!” signs in retail businesses are usually just BS. The stores keep normal prices higher than they should be so they can offer customers a faux discount. Whether it’s always true or just often true doesn’t matter. People don’t really get all that excited about signs that say “HUGE SALE 50% OFF” or whatever. We’re desensitized to it.
Groupon has been different, though. They’ve had real discounts, verifiably way below normal retail costs. That’s why so many tens of millions of people look forward to their Groupon email every day, and why so many people sign up for skydiving lessons that they never knew they wanted.
There are signs, though, that the model may not scale infinitely forever. Beyond just common sense, I mean. Some merchants have failed to take the coupons they’ve already sold on Groupon when they saw the overwhelming volume it brought in, for example.
Groupon seems to do a very good job of returning money to unhappy customers in those situations. And by doing that they’ve kept their brand strong and synonymous with getting genuine good deals.
Not today though.
Groupon offered users throughout the U.S. a $20 off coupon for Valentines Day flowers from FTD. People who bought the coupon had to use a special URL to purchase the flowers. And then they were shown a regular price for the flowers of $50 before the $20 coupon.
Which is fine except that the regular FTD site shows a price of $40 for the same item, meaning Groupon users only really got $10 off, not $20.
This is all kinds of things. False advertising by FTD to start, since they’re showing a different retail price for Groupon users v. people coming to FTD without the Groupon link. And, say users, the coupon only works if you go through the Groupon link.
There are other complaints about the offer as well, like FTD pushing deliveries to February 15, and charging a service fee. Those things are annoying. But the different price point is what really worries me.
For Groupon to continue to grow they need to get more big national advertisers, and those advertisers need to not be screwing around with customer trust. The Gap campaign was well handled. This FTD “deal” wasn’t.
Sour deals like this hurt Groupon’s brand, because burned customers won’t be so eager to check out the new daily deals. They’ll just assume it’s a scam, and ignore it all. Just like those HUGE SALE! signs in the window at your favorite retail store.
E-Readers Spark a “Reading Revolution”
Not since LeVar Burton told wonderful stories to me on my television screen have I ever thought of something so dramatic as a “reading revolution.” Actually, PC World describes it as a “revolution in mobile computing,” but based on their support data, reading revolution is more accurate.
The magazine published a look at the respective success stories of the Amazon Kindle and Apple iPad and the greater impact those success have had. With sales booming in the tens of millions (the iPad is expected to hit the 10 million mark this year and e-readers are expected to hit nearly 20 million by 2013), e-reading devices have had an impact well beyond the bottom lines of electronics manufacturers.
According to PC World’s article, research indicates that 40 percent of people in a recent survey read more now with e-readers than they ever did with books (read: e-readers are a lot cooler and less messy than a pile of dusty novels). Meanwhile, Amazon estimates that people buy three times as many digital books as they would comparable hard copies. Digital books are immediate and convenient, and there’s no reason not to buy one when you want to read.
The e-reader market has gotten even more attractive this summer. Amazon recently launched the third incarnation of the Kindle, a model that is smaller, lighter, longer running and significantly cheaper. For a long time $259 was the going rate for top e-readers, but Amazon’s latest Kindle can be had for a retail price as low as $139 (Wi-Fi-only model). That model has become the fastest-selling Kindle ever, according to Amazon. Barnes and Noble has also dropped the price on its Nook e-reader to as low as $149.
Wondering what all the fuss is about? Take advantage of dropping prices and shop e-readers today.
For more information about greater e-reader trends, take a look at the Wall Street Journal article that PC World sourced in its own piece.
Justin Bieber Talks Sex, Abortion in Rolling Stone
To the delight of young girls everywhere, Justin Bieber graces the latest cover of Rolling Stone and speaks candidly about girls, politics and ... sex.
The 16-year-old pop star, who is reportedly dating Selena Gomez, reveals he believes in waiting for love before having sex.
"I don't think you should have sex with anyone unless you love them ... I think you should just wait for the person you're in love with," the 'Never Say Never' star says. (In the issue, we also find out that the desktop image on Bieber's laptop is a photo of him and Gomez against an orange sunset. Aww!)
And although Bieber isn't old enough to vote, he discusses politics, admitting he has an opinion on abortion.
"I really don't believe in abortion," Bieber says. "It's like killing a baby?" When pressed about abortion when the pregnancy is the result of rape, Bieber says: "Um. Well, I think that's really sad, but everything happens for a reason. I guess I haven't been in that position, so I wouldn't be able to judge that."
Bieber's issue of Rolling Stone hits newsstands Feb. 18.

Continued Alba, "I appreciated all of the love and support you all gave me during my first pregnancy and will definitely appreciate it again this time around."
Though the star played coy last fall when UsMagazine.com asked if they were looking to add on to their brood -- "We are enjoying [Honor]," she said -- she couldn't help gushing when it came to her two-year-old daughter.

"She picks out her clothes," Alba told Us. "Usually it’s a big boy shirt with a princess dress. She always wants to wear her little plastic high heel shoes or she likes to wear my heels."
Lindsay Is NOT Doing The Late Show
It had been previously announced that Lindsay Lohan would be coming onto The Late Show with David Letterman, but now it looks like it won't be happening.
Here's what Worldwide Pants Incorporated said about it in a statement:
“We made a mistake. Someone purporting to be a friend of Lindsay’s reached out to the show yesterday, allegedly on her behalf, and booked her to appear. Clearly, this person was not authorized to make commitments on her behalf.”
"We wish Lindsay well, and look forward to having her on the show in the future.”
And here's what Lindsay had to say about it on Twitter:
"I am NOT going to be doing David Letterman. I’m not sure how this happened, but I am sorry for the confusion.”
Too bad. Could have been inneresting to see her open up about all her recent legal dramz.
And WHO booked an appearance on Lindsay's behalf? That's kind of messed up, but ALSO kind of supportive…for a prank.
Ted and Grace - Britain's Got Talent
One audition stole the show on Saturday night - 92 year old Ted Hall and his granddaughter Grace join us live
NAMES: Ted & Grace (Ted Hall and Grace Bower)
AGE: 92 & 21
FROM: Scunthorpe
TALENT: Singers
BACKGROUND: Ted, a retired Army recruit, and Grace, a Lady Gaga tribute act, are grandfather and granddaughter who first started singing as a duo when Grace was little. They are very close and Ted is very proud of Grace and says she follows his attributes and loves to show off like him! Ted loves pop music and Grace is inspired by people like Gwen Stefani and Lady Gaga.
Ted is originally from Sheffield but now lives in Scunthorpe near to his daughter and her family who he says looks after him tremendously. Grace has lived in Scunthorpe all her life apart from when she moved to university to study police and criminal investigation; she now lives back with her parents and brother.
QUESTIONS:
Are you nervous about performing in front of Simon Cowell?
Ted: I’m scared, but not petrified. These hands have made parts for spitfires so there’s nothing he can chuck at me that I can’t handle.
Grace: I’m nervous, but good nervous – excited nervous. Every female singer LOVES Simon Cowell and wants the opportunity to perform in front of him.
What would you do with £100,000 prize money if you won?
Ted: Give something to the poor. And I’d make sure all my friends had a drink with me.
Grace: Pay off my student debt and buy myself a record deal!!!
Why should you win Britain’s Got Talent?
Ted: I don’t think we should win, I hope the other people and the judges should think we should win! I worked 15 hard years in the entertainment industry & hope it has paid off to be able to win something like this.
Grace: Because our act is a typical British, eccentric, variety act and I hope it can touch all members of the public, from young to old hearts.
How would you feel if you won?
Ted: Elated!
Grace: So proud of us and thrilled to share such an experience with my granddad on what could be his last chance!
Jai McDowall - Britain's Got Talent
Singer Jai McDowall won "Britain's Got Talent" series 5 and his victory, at the same time, debunks the story that the show is fixed. McDowall, the 24-year-old who is called the "dark horse" by judge Amanda Holden, beat 12-year-old favorite Ronan Parke who reportedly has been groomed by Simon Cowell to win the show.
McDowall won by 2.5 percentage points. "I feel absolutely amazing, fantastic," the Scottish singer said, "it's so much more." Parke himself who is compared to Justin Bieber did not hold a bitter feeling. "I loved it, thank you to everyone who voted. Congratulations Jai," he said.
Cowell commented, "Despite this result Ronan has still got what it takes to go all the way. He's a great kid and I'm going to make him a star." Ronan then told Mirror, "I'm really happy I came second. I had the best time on the show and I've made some great friends especially New Bounce and Jai. I can't wait to release an album with both covers and my own songs. It's been my dream for as long as I can remember."
As the winner, McDowall is entitled to GBP100,000 prize and a gig in front of the Queen at the Royal Variety later this year.
Britain's Got Talent 2011
Rumours had circulated for months suggesting that the duo were in contention to join Simon Cowell and Amanda Holden, and it has now been confirmed they will be joining the talent show for next year's series.
A tweet from ITV's press centre read: 'ITV signs Michael McIntyre and David Hasselhoff for Britain's Got Talent judging panel.'
The show, presented by comedy duo Ant and Dec, will have four judges for the first time when it returns next year.
Michael McIntyre has admitted that the appointment thrilled him.
'I'm a massive fan of Britain's Got Talent and am extremely excited to be a judge on the new series,' the comedian said.
He added: 'I was so thrilled when Simon Cowell asked me that I immediately wanted to run in to Ant and Dec's arms to celebrate.'
MORE: Michael McIntyre won't be leaving the country
Fans of the show were less than pleased, with many using Twitter to voice their disapproval of the appointment.
User alextenenbaum said: 'Michael McIntyre and The Hoff to join Amanda Holden for Britain's Got Talent. Bizarre from ITV. Who has credibility on that panel?'
Another user, shaungunner, said: 'The announcement that Michael McIntyre is to be a judge of Britain's Got Talent has made sure I NEVER watch the programme again.'

Steven Hall - Britain's Got Talent 2011 Audition
Britain's Got Talent judge David Hasselhoff has admitted that he is angry that comedy dancer Steven Hall made it through to the final.
The Hoff vented his anger of Britain's Got More Talent after his fellow judges votes to send home singer Edward Reid and let Hall through.
He said: "Steven got that act from YouTube. He can not sustain it. He could hardly get through it/.
"What else is Steven going to do? "
He added: "Edward is creative, he's got a fantastic voice, he's got fantastic charisma. He came on and wowed everybody. He deserves to be in the final.
"We've already got Jean Martyn in the final. We've already got one crazy lady. Now we've got another crazy guy. The Queen is going to think we're a bunch of wackos."
Hasselhoff added that acappella group Out of the Blue were unlucky not to make it through to the final.
He said: "I'm sick that they're not going through and I think the Queen would like them a lot more than dancing Steve."

Robbie Firmin - Britain's Got Talent 2011 audition
It’s young blue eyes – Britain’s Got Talent hopeful Robbie Firmin is a pint-sized Frank Sinatra.
The seven-year-old wows the judges in tonight’s edition of the ITV1 show, performing his version of the Sinatra classic My Way.
And it looks like he is a long way from facing his final curtain after being heaped with praise by the judging panel.
The youngster from Chatham in Kent donned a suit and hat to complete his transformation into Sinatra – famed for songs such as You Make Me Feel So Young.
He also tried to turn matchmaker by telling audition judge Louis Walsh his aunt is looking for a new boyfriend.
“I think she would want you to be it,” he tells Walsh, before inviting his aunt on stage.
Young talent seems to meet the judges’ approval with his performance.
Amanda Holden tells him: “You were fantastic, it was fabulous.”
And fellow panellist Michael McIntyre says: “Robbie, I thought that was just brilliant, it had everything – you toyed with the audience, they were up, they were down, they were swaying. Robbie you’re a star.”
Also on the show is another youthful music act – duo Follow The Right Path, who impress the judges with a rap about their grandfathers.
And Walsh thinks pals Jamie, 14, and George, 13 – who met though playing football together – could have a bright future.
He tells them: “I thought it sounded like a hit record. I think your granddads would be very proud of you. You’re great role models for young kids.”
Also on the show is a performing dog act Mexican Mayhem, featuring Chihuahuas Twizzle and Tucker.
But one of the pets ignores the routine – to the frustration of sombrero-wearing owner Melanie.
She had earlier told judges: “These dogs have got a hundred times more talent than I have in my little finger. These little girls could go on stage in front of any member of the royal family, I’d be so proud of them.”
McIntyre reckons the act is even better because of Twizzle’s disobedience.
Ronan Parke - Britain's Got Talent 2011 Audition
Meet Ronan Parke — Britain’s Got Talent’s new sensation!
Only 12-years-old, it was actually his own idea to audition for the UK talent competition.
Ronan recently told BBC about performing in front of Simon Cowell during the semi-finals last week, “When I was standing there on stage… I looked at Simon and he gave me a little wink and that really boosted my confidence. He gave me lovely comments - I couldn’t have asked for better comments from him.”
