Britain’s Got Talent 2011: Les Gibson the next Paul Burling? (VIDEO)
41-year-old impressionist Les Gibson will be seen wowing the judges on tomorrow night’s Britain’s Got Talent pane; .
“At school I was quite shy, the other kids would be going off having a sly fag behind the bike sheds and I used to impersonate all the teachers for them. I started doing talent competitions, local ones in Liverpool, and then I started doing the holiday parks. I’ve been doing impressions now, full-time, for 13 years. I’m working for myself right now and it can be a very insecure job, it’s hard work, driving up and down the country, wondering where the next gig’s coming from. There’s times when there isn’t as many gigs as usual, you never know what’s around the corner.”
Les takes to the stage and begins his act with an impression of Ant hosting I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! followed by a takeoff of Dec.
In the wings the boys are laughing. As Les impersonates Dec, Ant says: “I preferred mine.”
As the judges laugh, Ant tells Dec: “I don’t think you’re that camp normally. You don’t normally sound like that. Ok, maybe a little bit.”
Les continues his act with impressions of Alan Sugar, Ross Kemp and Coronation Street’s Kevin Webster and as he stands he gets a standing ovation from the audience. In the wings, Dec jokes: “They’re on their feet but I’m going to smash his face in when he comes off.”
Michael tells Les: “Les, I really, really, really enjoyed it, I thought you were brilliant. Very charismatic. Brilliant stuff with Ant and Dec. I don’t
know what I found funnier, how much I enjoyed you or the fact that David Hasslehoff has no idea who any of those people are.
“I can’t wait to see what other impressions you do, you’ve obviously got a very versatile and diverse range. Well done.”
As he comes off, Ant jokes: “I’ve told Dec it was me and Cheryl Cole, he thought it was too camp.” Dec laughs.
As the auditions continue, it becomes clear that David is struggling with some of the regional accents.
One contestant, James, says: “I’m from Glasgow, from a place called Weymss Bay, across from the Cowal Peninsula.”
David looks confused and says: “I have no idea what you’re saying to me, but it sounds great.”
Asked what he’ll be playing, James says: “My own Boogie Woogie, do you know Jools Holland? Have you heard of Jools Holland?”
David replies: “Yes, Phil Collins, yes.”
